Freedom or Safety?

The controversial new law banning Muslim women from wearing a full Burka cam into effect yesterday in France, since then it has been confirmed that at least two women have been arrested and are still currently being detained by French authorities for wearing the religious garment in public.

The French authorities have claimed that although the women were breaking the law by wearing their veils this was not the reason they are being detained, instead saying the women were arrest for 'joining an unauthorised protest against the ban'.

The law as it stands will result in a £133 ($217) fine for any woman caught wearing a Burka in public and a maximum sentence of 2 years imprisonment for anybody forcing women to wear Burkas. In an attempt to quell religious concerns, if found in public the women are first transported either to their home or the nearest police station before being asked to remove their veils.

I live in the most culturally diverse city, in the most culturally diverse country in the world so to me it seems outrageous that the French police can get away with such policies. What are your opinions?

  1. I must say I agree with the law :/ While everybody should have the right to practice their religions, it doesn't always work out for the best...

  3. I've heard about this. I think that people should be able to practice their religion as long as it doesn't infringe on other people's human rights.

  4. I can't have a proper opinion without being unfair right now. This is news to me, I don't live there, I don't know what the issues are, and I can certainly see positives and negatives in possible arguments. I'll have to look into this.

  9. This is terrible! What's the point of this? Just leave them alone. Is it hurting anyone else?

  10. While it might seem harsh, I can understand this law. Religion has been oppressing women for centuries, and now there's a law to stop it. I don't care if two women got detained, when religion stops oppressing people I'll be happy. Gotta crack a few eggs to make an omelette

  11. You have to live there to understand the situation and say whether is too far fetched or if it was necessary.

  18. This isn't even about religion. But I believe in personal freedom and this is clearly against personal freedom. No one in france even wears an actual burka. OK ban it for teachers in secular schools, but completely burning a piece of clothing is insane and very nazi-like.

  20. very divisive topic...
I am all about individual rights/freedom so the thought of a government vehemently attacking one group (here, Muslims) while leaving others alone (Christians can still wear crucifix in public right?) seems horribly unfair.

However, my larger disdain for organized religion in general trumps all else. Practice/worship/belief whatever you like in private...but I'd love to live in a world where everyone kept their BS religious views to themselves and kept their "faith" out of the public realm.

  21. Interesting topic. It should be noted the French government surveyed the population about this, and the public voted for the ban. It was only a marginal number of muslims wearing the veil, and from a security point of view, I can understand this.

  22. Tough questions, with complicated answers.

  23. you see, thay banned only the ones that mask ones face... i can easily understand why there is a law not to cover your face all the time in public

  24. I wrote a paper on this a while back. The conclusion that I seem to reach was that you can't have both.
